These cards are ‘not’ representative of any authority, nor are they a get-out-of-jail-free card. They simply bring together all relevant information to help demonstrate a legal defence for a HEMA or other martial arts practitioner transporting a sword to or from training.

The legal defence, as stipulated on the back of each card, reads as follows:

Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 defines the following as an offence:

“Any person who without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, the proof whereof shall lie on him, has with him in any public place any offensive weapon shall be guilty of an offence.”

The defence in law is defined acording to the Offensive Weapons Act 2019

“The defences that already exist under s141 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 in relation to manufacture, importation and sale of certain weapons, also apply for possesion in private. This includes that the weapon in question… …is to be used for sporting activities.”

In accordance this weapon is:

  • in transit to or from a place of martial arts training
  • not visable or carried in a threatening manner
  • in a closed container
